Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) is one of the most serious problems facing tomato growers in Sudan and other hot regions, and it can cause major yield losses when it infects plants at an early stage.
How Does the Virus Spread?
The virus is transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which picks it up from infected plants and passes it on to healthy ones. Whitefly populations build up in hot, dry weather, so the risk of infection rises during these periods.
Symptoms
- Yellowing of young leaf margins, which curl upward into a cup shape.
- Smaller leaves, stunted plants and shortened internodes.
- Flower drop, poor fruit set and a sharp fall in yield.
How to Protect Your Crop
- Choose tolerant varieties: this is the most important and effective step, since there is no cure once a plant is infected.
- Raise healthy seedlings: use nurseries protected with insect-proof netting.
- Monitor whiteflies early: use yellow sticky traps and follow control programs recommended by specialists.
- Remove infected plants and weed hosts of the virus in and around the field.
- Avoid overlapping crops and never plant a new field next to an old infected one.
SEEDTECH-SUDAN Varieties Tolerant to TYLCV
SEEDTECH-SUDAN offers a range of Technisem hybrid tomatoes with high tolerance to this virus, suited to different seasons:
- Kiara F1 andJaguar+ F1 andAnaya F1 andJaguar F1 for the hot summer.
- Cobra 26 F1 andSavana F1 for the rainy Kharif season.
Note: tolerance is not full immunity; mild symptoms may appear under very heavy pressure, but a tolerant plant still maintains good yields. Always combine tolerant varieties with the prevention practices above.
