Kiara F1 Tomato

How to Choose the Right Tomato Variety for Each Season in Sudan

Choosing the variety is the first decision that makes or breaks a tomato season. A variety that yields brilliantly in the dry summer may struggle in the rainy Kharif season, and vice versa. This guide sums up how to choose the right variety for your season and area.

1. Start With Your Growing Season

In Sudan, tomatoes face two main challenges depending on the season: extreme heat and drought in summer, and high humidity, heavy rain and fungal and bacterial diseases during Kharif. Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) remains a threat in most seasons, so tolerance to this virus is essential.

2. Varieties for the Hot Summer and Dry Season

  • Kiara F1: high quality under extreme heat and heavy TYLCV pressure, with firm oval fruit of 100 – 110 g and very good storage capacity.
  • Jaguar+ F1: excellent adaptation to hot weather, with heavy 130 – 180 g fruit and a broad resistance package.
  • Anaya F1: a summer variety with large, very firm fruit that withstands long-distance transport.
  • Jaguar F1: high fruit set in the dry-season heat and an early harvest.

3. Varieties for the Rainy Kharif Season

  • Cobra 26 F1: excellent tolerance to TYLCV and bacterial wilt, plus resistance to Fusarium wilt, TMV and Verticillium, so it keeps producing through the rains.
  • Savana F1: the best fit for hot, rainy conditions, with very high yields and excellent post-harvest storage.

4. When Cost Is the Priority

If you need an economical open-pollinated variety, Rio Grande+ is an improved version of the well-known classic, with a vigorous plant and 100 – 110 g oval fruit at a lower seed cost than hybrids.

5. Quick Tips Before You Decide

  • Check your field's disease history: if you have had bacterial wilt before, choose a tolerant variety.
  • Balance fruit size against firmness according to where you sell: distant markets need firmer fruit.
  • Plan your transplanting date so the harvest coincides with periods of higher prices.
